A governorship hopeful of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Debo Akande, has unveiled plans for an Ibadan Historical Library and Hall of Fame project aimed at preserving the city’s cultural heritage and strengthening historical awareness among younger generations.
The project was formally presented on Monday during a foundation-laying ceremony held at Bode Amoo Hall, Ibadan House, Oke-Aremo, under the 2026 Historical Tour Committee.
Akande, who is also Director-General of the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA) and Executive Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde, said the initiative is designed to go beyond infrastructure development to preserve identity and historical continuity.
He expressed concern over the growing disconnect between young people and Ibadan’s rich cultural heritage, warning that many youths can no longer identify key historical figures or appreciate the city’s contributions to Yoruba culture and national development.
According to him, the Hall of Fame will serve not just as a collection of artefacts, but as a structured knowledge centre documenting the lives and contributions of Ibadan’s traditional rulers, warriors, professionals, and notable personalities.
He described the project as a deliberate effort to institutionalise memory and preserve legacy for future generations.
Also speaking, the President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief (Barr.) Sulaiman Ajewole, said the idea originated from a historical subcommittee of the council.
He explained that the initiative is aimed at formally recognising individuals who have contributed to Ibadan’s development, including traditional rulers, community leaders, and political figures.
Ajewole stressed that proper documentation and public recognition are essential to preventing cultural loss and preserving history.
He commended Akande for championing the project and expressed optimism that it would become a major cultural landmark, serving both educational and historical purposes for generations to come.
