A civil society organisation, Right Thinkers Global Initiative (RTGI), popularly known as Eagleping, has commenced a campaign demanding transparency and accountability in the execution of multi-billion naira Federal Government constituency and capital projects in Ogun State for the 2024 fiscal year.
The group, in a press statement issued on Tuesday, said the move forms part of its nationwide anti-corruption and civic enlightenment drive aimed at promoting responsible governance and public accountability.
RTGI disclosed that it has formally requested detailed information on one of the top 20 most expensive capital projects in Ogun State, valued at N1,396,495,622.12. The project is titled “Kick-starting Construction of New House of Assembly Complex in Ogun State.”
According to the organisation, the request was made pursuant to the Freedom of Information (FOI), Act to enable citizens to understand the project’s scope, contractor details, funding structure, and level of implementation.
Speaking on the initiative, Head of Operations of RTGI (Eagleping), Mr. Kayoses Akinola, described the action as a fulfilment of citizens’ civic responsibility in governance.
“This effort is part of our national campaign to monitor public projects and ensure accountability. Citizens have a constitutional role to participate in governance as enshrined in Section 14(2)(a), (b), and (c) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended,” he said.
Akinola stressed that public institutions owe Nigerians a duty of transparency, particularly in the execution of projects funded with public resources.
“The people must not be reduced to mere ‘masses.’ Regardless of economic status, citizens deserve full disclosure and accountability in how public funds are utilised,” he added.
The organisation further noted that its campaign is not limited to a single project, but marks the beginning of sustained civic engagement to ensure that government projects deliver value for money and meet expected standards.
RTGI reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with anti-graft agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to strengthen public integrity and fight corruption.
“We remain committed to working with relevant institutions to promote transparency and accountability for a better Nigeria,” Akinola said.
The group urged citizens and stakeholders to support the initiative by demanding openness in public spending and actively participating in governance processes.
