In fulfilment of the Lions Club International April activity, which is Environmental Focus Week, the Gbagada Jasmine Lions Club, Lagos, weekend, distributed reusable bags to shoppers and residents in its service area as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and cleaner communities.
The event, which took place at Royal Prince Supermarket, Gbagada, Lagos State, saw members of the club distribute reusable biodegradable bags to shoppers at the supermarket and sensitised the public on how to promote a green environment and encourage proper waste disposal.
The club advocated sustainable everyday choices, encouraged residents to say no to single-use plastics and embrace reusable shopping bags.
Speaking at the occasion, District Governor, Lions International, District 404-A3 Nigeria, Lion Mary Onu said the aim of the exercise was to promote a clean environment by giving the shoppers and residents reusable bags.
According to her, “this shows that we can actually reuse our shopping bags. These bags are biodegradable, so they are not plastic, which can clog our environment. They are not one-off bags.
“We are delighted that the Lagos State government has been proactive by bringing the environmental exercise back, but it’s not just about bringing it back, because some people see it as extra time to sleep. It’s actually a period to take time out to clean your environment. If everyone cleans his or her little corner, I believe we would live in a cleaner Lagos.”
Also speaking, President of Gbagada Jasmine Lions Club, Region 5,.District 404-A3.I, Lion Uche Akpan, said the programme is geared towards “the preservation of our environment and encouraging people to use biodegradable materials.”
She advised the residents to “buy only what you need and avoid single-use bags. Sort and dispose off wastes in the appropriate containers.”
