SOKOTO — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State has launched an electronic membership registration drive aimed at expanding its grassroots base across the state’s 23 local government areas ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The initiative is part of a nationwide effort by the party to modernise its membership database, strengthen internal structures, and boost mobilisation as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the next election cycle.

Speaking on Wednesday during a one-day Train-the-Trainer session for officials who will oversee the exercise, former State Secretary of the party, Kabiru Aliyu, said the digital registration would significantly enhance the PDP’s organisational strength in Sokoto and across the country.

Aliyu said the party is targeting large-scale enrolment across all 244 political wards in the state, noting that the exercise is designed to deepen grassroots participation and improve data management.

“We must commend the state and national leadership of the party for this bold initiative to register new members nationwide,” he said.

He added that the exercise would strengthen the party’s chances ahead of the 2027 elections by expanding its support base.

Also speaking, the Co-Chairperson of the registration committee, Zainab Dogon-Daji, said the training programme was aimed at equipping participants with the technical skills required for effective implementation of the electronic registration process.

She explained that similar training would be extended to ward-level officials to ensure smooth execution across the state, adding that the digital system would improve transparency and ensure a reliable membership database.

According to her, the electronic platform would also enhance accuracy in record-keeping and support better internal planning within the party.

In his remarks, former Commissioner for Water Resources and ex-governorship candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Dahiru Yusuf Yabo, urged members and residents to participate actively in the exercise.

“We should all be patriotic and take part in this crucial exercise to avoid disenfranchisement in the 2027 general elections,” he said.

Another stakeholder, Hayatu Tafiya, also encouraged widespread participation, saying increased registration would strengthen the party’s structure in Sokoto State.

Political observers say the digital membership drive reflects the PDP’s renewed focus on technology-driven organisation and grassroots expansion as parties position themselves for the 2027 elections.
