FCT: Philanthropist empowers women, awards scholarships to 200 students

A philanthropist, Mr. Ukochukwu Akunodozie, has distributed essential food items to hundreds of women in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and awarded scholarships to no fewer than 200 students.

Speaking at an event over the weekend in Abuja, Akunodozie said his acts of generosity go beyond occasional charity, describing them as a core part of his identity and a source of personal fulfillment.

The outreach formed part of activities marking his birthday. Akunodozie, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Blake Resort, Abuja, said giving to others brings him more satisfaction than personal spending.

“There is no particular thing that pushed me into this. It is my life; it is who I am. The greatest joy I get is not when I spend on myself, but when I spend on people. The fulfillment comes from seeing their excitement and happiness,” he said.

Speaking on the scholarship initiative funded through his foundation, he emphasised that education remains the most reliable platform for bridging inequality between the rich and the poor.
According to him, many children are disadvantaged from birth due to their economic background, stressing that education offers a level playing field.

“The child of a president or the richest man can only truly compete with the child of a labourer through education. It is the safest platform for equal opportunity,” he said.

Akunodozie disclosed that he currently sponsors over 200 students, providing tuition, uniforms, shoes, school bags, and writing materials. He added that the foundation also organises special preparatory classes for academically challenged students to help them catch up with their peers.

On Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges, he urged citizens to focus on contributing positively rather than merely criticising the government, noting that his business ventures employ more than 600 staff across Abuja and other regions, contributing to economic development.

“As business people, our responsibility is not just to criticise those in power but to add value. If millions of Nigerians begin to contribute meaningfully, the burden on government will reduce significantly,” he said.

Akunodozie also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting widows and the less privileged throughout the year, describing his current efforts as part of a broader, ongoing mission.

In his remarks, the Acting Governor of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), FCT Chapter, Mr. Michael Oyibo, described Akunodozie as a “low-profile” philanthropist who has quietly impacted lives for over 18 years.
“He has been doing remarkable things for people without seeking attention. We felt his story should be told to inspire others,” Oyibo said.

A close associate, Mr. Ibrahim Usman, added that Akunodozie’s interventions cut across primary, secondary, and tertiary education levels, particularly for vulnerable groups.

The event, attended by friends, entertainment industry stakeholders, and various women’s groups from both Muslim and Christian communities, featured the distribution of food items alongside a birthday celebration.
