Former Kwara State lawmaker, Hon. Saheed Olamilekan Popoola, has officially declared his intention to contest for a National Assembly seat under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Popoola made the declaration on Sunday at the PDP secretariat in Ilorin, where he addressed party leaders, elders, and supporters from across Kwara South.
He pledged loyalty to the party’s leadership and internal processes, noting that he would contest either for the House of Representatives or the Senate depending on the zoning arrangement of the party.
“My dear leaders, elders, party faithful, and the good people of Kwara South, I formally declare my intention to contest under the Peoples Democratic Party for a seat in the National Assembly in 2027,” he said.
He described his political journey as one rooted in grassroots engagement, highlighting his past roles as Secretary and Chairman of Offa Local Government, Commissioner for Youth Development, and two-term member of the Kwara State House of Assembly.
Popoola also recalled his political transitions over the years, stating that he began his political career in the PDP under the guidance of Alhaja Badmus Odufe before moving through other platforms and eventually returning to the PDP in 2025.
He said his return to the party was motivated by a sense of belonging and renewed confidence in its leadership, particularly that of Abubakar Bukola Saraki.
According to him, Kwara’s political landscape has changed, and representation at the national level must be more proactive in attracting development and opportunities to the constituency.
“With my experience as a former Chief Executive, Commissioner, and Legislator, I understand governance and how to attract development for our people through the National Assembly,” he said.
He pledged full alignment with party decisions and expressed readiness to serve in any capacity zoned to his constituency.
Popoola also appealed to party leaders, elders, and stakeholders to support his aspiration, promising discipline, loyalty, and commitment to the PDP.
In his response, Kwara PDP Chairman, Hon. Issa Bawa, commended Popoola’s approach and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to fairness and internal democracy ahead of the 2027 elections.
He urged aspirants to emulate Popoola’s respect for party structure, assuring that the PDP would remain united and competitive going into the next election cycle.
