The immediate past Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government Area in Lagos State, Gbenga Abiola, has declared his intention to contest the Agege Constituency I seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly in the 2027 general elections.
Abiola, who also served as Sole Administrator of the council, made the declaration on Sunday at a well-attended gathering in Dopemu, Agege.
He said his ambition is tied to the decision of the incumbent Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, noting that he would only run if the six-term lawmaker opts not to seek re-election.
“It pleases me to announce my intention to represent Agege Constituency I and continue the sterling performance of our leader, Obasa,” he said.
“Obasa has a loyal and trustworthy son in me to replace him if he decides not to run again. I know that if not for God and Obasa, I would not be here. If he does not run, I am ready for the assignment.”
Abiola described the turnout at the event as a reflection of widespread support for his aspiration and pledged not to disappoint constituents if given the mandate.
“Our leader should be assured that I will deliver. The All Progressives Congress remains the party to beat,” he added.
He promised to sustain the developmental strides recorded under Obasa’s representation, stressing that his years of service in local government administration have prepared him for higher responsibility.
“I have been trained enough to fit into this role. I have the experience, having served as sole administrator, vice chairman and secretary. I have made impact, hence this show of support,” he said.
The former council boss also highlighted his grassroots engagement, noting that his foundation has supported many residents across the constituency.
“I feel the people’s pain and have reached out to many through my initiatives. The result is evident in the support we see today,” he added.
While commending Obasa for ongoing projects in Agege, Abiola cautioned against violence ahead of the All Progressives Congress primaries.
“I do not believe in do-or-die politics. If chosen, I will represent you well. Assembly or not, I will continue to support residents through my foundation and initiatives,” he said.
He urged his supporters to remain loyal to Obasa and adhere to party directives as preparations begin for the 2027 elections.
Abiola, who is also the National Coordinator of Tinubu Media Force, lauded the reforms of President Bola Tinubu, describing them as critical steps toward repositioning the country’s economy.
In his remarks, the Director-General of Agbelebu Solidarity Forum, Jamiu Ademosu, said the large turnout at the event underscored public confidence in Abiola’s leadership.
“What we are witnessing is respect for a man who has served Agege with dedication and integrity. The presence of youths, the elderly and persons with disabilities shows wide acceptance,” he said.
Ademosu added that Abiola’s declaration was in response to calls for higher service and expressed confidence in his capacity to represent the constituency effectively.
Also speaking, Akeem Arisekola, Treasurer of APC Ward B in Agege, commended Abiola’s humility and urged party members to rally support for his ambition.
