The Labour Party (LP) in Enugu State has elected a new set of executives to lead the party for the next four years, reaffirming its commitment to improving education, healthcare, and economic development.
The executives emerged through consensus and voice affirmation at the party’s state congress held in Enugu.
Those elected include Chief Ugwu Kingsley Chidera as State Chairman, Dr. Chibuzor Onyema as Secretary, Chukwuemeka Ephraim Ugwu as Deputy Chairman, Ochi Chimezie as Youth Leader, and Nwankwo Charity Chiyeaka as Woman Leader, among others.
In a significant development, the party also announced the expulsion of its former State Chairman, Casmir Uchenna Agbo, over alleged anti-party activities.
In his acceptance speech, the new chairman, Ugwu Kingsley Chidera, thanked members for their support and pledged to reposition the party for greater impact.
He described his emergence as coming at a critical time, stressing the need for renewed vision, purposeful leadership, and commitment to justice, equality, and people-focused governance.
“Our party is founded on the principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability. Every Nigerian deserves access to quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunities,” he said.
Chidera noted that challenges such as economic hardship and governance gaps require collective action, adding that the party is prepared to drive meaningful change.
He outlined plans to strengthen party structures across wards and local government areas, deepen engagement with members and stakeholders, and promote policies that directly benefit the people.
He also emphasized transparency and accountability, assuring that the party would uphold high standards in both internal administration and public governance.
“We must work together to build a future where every citizen has access to opportunities and resources, and where our children can thrive,” he added.
The chairman called on party members to remain committed and mobilised, assuring supporters that their trust would be rewarded with impactful leadership.
Speaking to journalists, the State Secretary, Chibuzor Onyema, expressed confidence that the party would win more elective positions in the 2027 general elections than it did in 2023.
He said the party is currently reorganising and strengthening its structures with the aim of winning control of the state government and securing a majority in the State House of Assembly.
