To mark World Malaria Day 2016 with the theme, “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must,” the Founder of the Caleb Danladi Foundation, Capt. Caleb Danladi, PhD, has called for intensified efforts to eliminate the disease, especially in vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
In a statement issued on the occasion, Danladi acknowledged the significant progress made over the years in reducing malaria infections and deaths. However, he cautioned that malaria remains a major public health challenge, with children under five and pregnant women still bearing the heaviest burden.
He described this year’s theme as a compelling call to action, stressing that while the tools and knowledge needed to end malaria already exist, they must be backed by sustained commitment and coordinated implementation.
Danladi highlighted the Foundation’s ongoing interventions, which include community sensitisation campaigns, distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, and advocacy for improved access to healthcare services in underserved communities.
According to him, achieving a malaria-free society will require stronger healthcare systems, increased investment in prevention and treatment, and heightened public awareness to drive behavioural change at the grassroots level.
He further urged government agencies, development partners, civil society organisations, and the private sector to strengthen collaboration and prioritise malaria elimination efforts.
“Decisive steps taken today will fast-track progress towards a malaria-free future,” he said.
Observed annually on April 25, World Malaria Day aims to raise awareness and mobilise global action to control and ultimately eradicate the disease.
