The Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transporters of Nigeria has intensified collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force to improve security across coastal waterways in Lagos and Ogun State.
This was the focus of a courtesy visit by ATBOWATON executives to the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the two states, Olohundare Jimoh, where both sides discussed strategies to curb kidnapping, sea piracy, and other crimes along water routes.
Jimoh commended the association for its proactive support and pledged closer cooperation with maritime stakeholders, stressing that sustained synergy is key to reducing criminal activities and boosting public confidence in water transport.
ATBOWATON National President, Ganiyu Shekoni Balogun, said the engagement was aimed at consolidating gains recorded in recent years, noting that improved security interventions have significantly reduced incidents of kidnapping and piracy that once discouraged passengers and investors.
He assured that the association would continue to support security operations by providing boats and logistics for patrols, rescue missions, and emergency response when necessary. He also highlighted ongoing sensitization of members to adopt the “see something, say something” approach to enhance intelligence gathering.
State representatives of the association reiterated their commitment to complying with security guidelines and maintaining close coordination with law enforcement agencies, noting that such efforts have contributed to safer waterways.
Both parties agreed on a framework assigning national issues to ATBOWATON executives, while state chairmen address local security and operational concerns.
The association expressed optimism that the strengthened partnership would restore public trust, increase patronage of water transport, and promote tourism and marine business activities across the region.
