The Chief Executive Officer of Blake’s Resort, Ukochukwu ThankGod Akunodozie, has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting widows and underprivileged children through scholarships and humanitarian outreach, despite Nigeria’s challenging economic conditions.
Akunodozie disclosed that his philanthropic efforts, spanning over 18 years, have largely been carried out quietly without media attention, driven by a deep personal passion for giving and community service.
He spoke during a humanitarian programme organised in Abuja to mark his birthday, where he emphasised that his motivation is rooted in a desire to uplift others and create meaningful impact.
“The joy I get is not when I spend on myself, but when I spend on people,” he said. “Seeing the excitement on their faces when they receive support is what drives me.”
As part of the initiative, the entrepreneur provided educational support to children of widows, stressing that education remains a powerful tool for bridging inequality in society. According to him, many children are disadvantaged not by choice but by circumstances, particularly financial constraints.
“The only platform where a child from any background can compete fairly is through education. If we want to give underprivileged children a real chance, we must invest in their education,” he added.
Akunodozie noted that his interventions are not limited to annual events, as support is extended consistently during festive periods and whenever the need arises. He described the initiative as part of his broader commitment to social responsibility and community development.
Addressing Nigeria’s economic realities, he acknowledged the difficulties faced by citizens and businesses but urged Nigerians to focus on contributing positively to society rather than solely criticising the government.
“As business people, our role is not just to complain but to contribute. If more Nigerians commit to adding value in their own way, the pressure on government will reduce significantly,” he said.
He also revealed that his company employs over 600 staff across Abuja and other locations, describing job creation as his contribution to national development.
While calling for greater accountability in governance, Akunodozie stressed the importance of individual responsibility, urging citizens to take proactive steps in improving their communities.
Beneficiaries of the outreach programme commended the initiative, describing the support as timely in the face of rising economic hardship.
