The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, is expected to resign in the coming days after securing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
Adelabu reportedly obtained the President’s consent during a meeting held on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he also briefed Tinubu on developments in the power sector since assuming office over two years ago.
According to a statement on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Tunji Bolaji, the President granted approval for the Minister to proceed with his political ambition, paving the way for his exit from the Federal Executive Council.
The statement added that Adelabu is expected to formally step down after concluding ongoing engagements aimed at ensuring continuity in key sector reforms.
His planned resignation comes amid ongoing challenges in the electricity sector, including fluctuations in power generation linked to gas supply constraints, infrastructure repairs, and outstanding obligations within the value chain.
During the meeting, Adelabu presented a report on reforms undertaken under his leadership, including efforts to stabilise electricity generation, strengthen transmission capacity, and improve efficiency across the power sector.
A major highlight of the engagement was the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy and its Strategic Implementation Plan, designed as a long-term roadmap for sector reforms.
President Tinubu commended the Minister for laying a strong policy foundation for the sector’s transformation and acknowledged progress recorded under his stewardship.
Adelabu, in turn, expressed appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve and reaffirmed his commitment to national development as he prepares to exit office for his political ambition.
