The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has raised concerns over uncertainties within opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging prompt resolution of internal disputes to safeguard democratic competition.

In a press statement on Sunday, signed by the Nationsl Coordinator, Com. Emmanuel Onwubiko, the group highlighted ongoing leadership issues within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), noting that unresolved disputes could affect party organisation and participation in the electoral process.

HURIWA emphasised that clarity in leadership structures is essential as the electoral calendar progresses, particularly with timelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party activities.

“Stable and well-organised political parties are critical to credible elections and meaningful voter choice,” the group stated.

The association noted that uncertainty within party structures may affect aspirants, internal planning, and overall readiness for the elections.

It called for all stakeholders, including party leaders and institutions, to work towards a peaceful and lawful resolution of disputes.

HURIWA also underscored the importance of maintaining public confidence in democratic processes, urging adherence to transparency, due process, and institutional independence.

“Democracy thrives where processes are clear, inclusive, and guided by the rule of law,” it said.

The group added that strengthening internal party systems and ensuring timely dispute resolution would contribute to a more stable political environment as the country moves closer to the 2027 polls.
