A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Dr Samuel Mawuyon Ajose, has clarified his position on the recent endorsement of the Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Hamzat, by the state leadership.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Director-General of the Ajose campaign, Mr Biodun Coker on Wednesday.
Ajose said that while endorsements were permissible under the nation’s constitution, the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution, such actions must align with the principle of fairness to avoid rancour among aspirants.
Speaking during a live interview on ARISE TV’s The Morning Show, the aspirant maintained that he remained committed to the party and would abide by decisions taken in its overall interest.
“Endorsement in itself is not illegal.
“It is recognised within the framework of our laws and party constitution, but it must be exercised with fairness and inclusiveness to prevent disaffection among aspirants,” he said.
He, however, suggested that the party leadership should have engaged all leading aspirants before arriving at such a decision.
“The leadership ought to have summoned the frontline aspirants and provided clear, convincing reasons for supporting a particular candidate.
That way, others can align fully and work together for the party’s success,” he added.
Ajose, who noted that he was the first aspirant to pick the party’s governorship nomination form, also spoke on the agitation for Badagry to produce the next governor of the state.
According to him, the clamour is both anticipated and morally justified, given what he described as decades of neglect in the area.
“For about 57 years, Badagry has not produced a governor.
“The agitation for inclusion is legitimate and resonates with many of our people,” he said.
The technocrat-turned-politician attributed his growing support base to his track record in business and human capital development.
He emphasised that the governorship race should not be seen as a confrontation but as a democratic contest that must guarantee a level playing field for all aspirants.
“This is not a battle; it is a contest. What is important is ensuring that the process is credible, transparent and fair to all participants,” Ajose stated.
While commending Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for strides recorded across key sectors, Ajose expressed confidence in his capacity to build on existing achievements.
“I commend the governor for the progress made so far.
“My vision is to consolidate on these gains and take Lagos to the next level by unlocking its vast economic potential,” he said.
Ajose, who runs a conglomerate employing over 300 staff, said he would leverage private sector expertise to implement his development blueprint for the state
