…Differences emerge over performance, endorsement

UYO — Some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Eket Senatorial District have expressed opposition to moves to adopt Senator Ekong Sampson as a consensus candidate for the Senate seat ahead of the 2027 National Assembly primaries.
The group also indicated that the decision on consensus could influence their participation in the election, citing concerns about representation.
Senator Sampson, who represents Eket (Akwa Ibom South) Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has declared interest in seeking another term in 2027 and has commenced consultations across the district.
Party members referenced an enlarged stakeholders’ meeting held in Eket Local Government Area, attended by constituents and political office holders, where some participants called for a change in representation.
Speaking with journalists in Uyo after the meeting, a stakeholder, Chief Chelly Okoko, said the district desires improved representation and a transition in leadership.
Another party member from Okobo Local Government Area, Mr Johnson Okwong, also expressed reservations about the senator’s re-election bid, noting that some constituents are seeking alternative representation in the next electoral cycle.
A political office holder from Mkpat Enin, who requested anonymity, similarly said there are growing calls within parts of the district for new leadership.
Reacting, the senator’s media aide, Mr Samuel Udoma, dismissed the concerns, stating that Senator Sampson continues to enjoy broad support across the senatorial district.
He cited endorsements from various groups, including stakeholders such as former Minister of Housing, Nduese Essien, as evidence of the senator’s acceptance.
Udoma maintained that the endorsements reflect sustained grassroots backing for the senator ahead of the 2027 elections.
