… Back Tinubu’s Re-election Bid
…warn of resistance, demand transparent primaries
ABUJA — Elders, leaders and stakeholders from Adamawa State under the aegis of the Gongola People have warned against any attempt to impose candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that such moves would be met with “resolute resistance.”
The group, while also expressing support for the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said their backing for the President at the national level does not extend to acceptance of imposed candidates in state-level elections.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, Engr. Markus Gundiri, on behalf of the Council of Elders of the Gongola People, said the group represents indigenous ethnic nationalities from the former Gongola region and beyond.
He said the stakeholders were concerned about alleged attempts by some actors within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to impose preferred candidates for the 2027 governorship election in Adamawa State.
“We will not accept, tolerate or allow any form of imposition on our people. Such tendencies undermine internal democracy and party cohesion,” Gundiri said.
He stressed that the group supports a transparent and credible process within the APC, adding that all aspirants must be allowed equal opportunity in a free and fair primary.
According to him, the emergence of any candidate must be based on the democratic choice of party members and delegates, not imposition by a select few.
“We demand democracy, not dictation. Whoever emerges must do so through a transparent and credible process,” he added.
Gundiri warned that any attempt to disregard the position of stakeholders and party members in Adamawa would be resisted through lawful and collective means.
He urged party leaders at both national and state levels to uphold internal democracy and ensure a level playing field for all aspirants, noting that fairness remains critical to the strength and unity of the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
