Uzodimma neutral on successor, says APC Chieftain, Akagburuonye

LAGOS — A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State, Obioma Success Akagburuonye, has commended Governor Hope Uzodimma for maintaining neutrality in the race to succeed him ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Akagburuonye, who is among aspirants eyeing the state’s top job, spoke in Lagos while reacting to claims in some quarters that he is a stooge of the governor.

“If anybody says I’m the Governor’s stooge, I wish the person well,” he said.

The APC chieftain spoke with journalists shortly after he was honoured by Champion Newspapers with the “Beacon of Hope for a Greater Imo” award, which he described as both humbling and prophetic.

He said Governor Uzodimma’s decision not to anoint a preferred successor has opened the political space, giving all aspirants a fair opportunity to present their programmes to the people of the state.
According to him, the governor’s posture reflects his belief in merit and divine providence.

“Governor Uzodimma came to power through the support of God and the people. He believes that power ultimately comes from God and has left the process open, making it possible for anyone with the right vision to aspire,” he said.

Akagburuonye cautioned aspirants against banking on political endorsements or financial influence, noting that leadership in Imo State requires more than connections.

“Anyone who thinks he can simply rely on money or connections and wait for endorsement may be disappointed,” he added.

He likened the process of leadership emergence to the development of a butterfly, warning that undue interference could be counterproductive.

On his ambition, Akagburuonye expressed confidence in his capacity to lead the state, stressing that Governor Uzodimma has laid a foundation that requires a capable successor.

“Imo State is not easy to govern. The governor has set a pace that requires the right person to sustain and improve on his achievements. I believe I have what it takes,” he said.

While commending the governor’s performance, he maintained that continuity of good governance should be the focus of the next administration.

He also dismissed concerns over insecurity in the state, insisting that Imo remains safe.

“I stand to be challenged. Many of the issues people talk about are self-inflicted. Imo is safe,” he said.
Highlighting his philanthropic activities across the 27 local government areas of the state, Akagburuonye said his record of service and impact would speak for him.

“My achievements are verifiable. I will not steal public funds because I do not need money I will not use,” he stated.
He added that his foray into politics is aimed at expanding initiatives he has already undertaken privately, anchored on transparency, accountability and empowerment.
Akagburuonye, a lawyer and entrepreneur, recently marked his 60th birthday with the launch of his 400-page autobiography, Me and My God, in which he chronicles his life journey and faith.
“When the world doubted me, I leaned on God, and He became my strength,” he said.
