JALINGO — Agbu Kefas has officially flagged off the construction of a state-of-the-art Livestock Service Centre (LSC) in Sunkani, Ardo-Kola Local Government Area, aimed at transforming livestock farming from traditional subsistence herding to a high-yield, commercialized industry.
The initiative is part of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) and positions Taraba among five states nationwide selected for the pilot scheme. Governor Kefas, represented by his Chief of Staff, Jeji Williams, described the facility as a cornerstone for food security and economic growth.
Dr. Sanusi Abubakar, National Project Coordinator for L-PRES, said the centre will operate under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to ensure sustainability and prevent it from becoming a white elephant. The PPP framework is currently awaiting World Bank ratification.
Hananiah Albert, State L-PRES Project Coordinator, outlined the multi-functional nature of the centre, which will include holding and grazing areas, working chutes, loading ramps, weighbridges, a veterinary clinic, isolation pens, and a dipping vat.
Additional facilities will feature Artificial Insemination (AI) stalls, vaccine stores, feed and fodder sheds, a feed processing unit, water and electricity systems, waste management, and all-weather access roads. Albert emphasized that the interrelated businesses and services will drive revenue generation and job creation.
The LSC represents a major step toward strengthening Taraba’s livestock sector, improving food security, and creating sustainable economic opportunities for local communities.
