SOKOTO:–A major political realignment has emerged in Sokoto State as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2023 election, Alhaji Saidu Umar, popularly known as Ubandoman Sokoto, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Umar announced his decision in a statement made available to newsmen in Sokoto on Thursday, saying the move followed extensive consultations with political associates, supporters, and stakeholders across the state.

The former governorship candidate explained that his defection was driven by what he described as the urgent need to reposition the political struggle for good governance and inclusive leadership in Sokoto State and Nigeria at large.

According to him, the decision was not taken lightly but became necessary after deep reflection on the current political realities and the aspirations of the people who had consistently supported his political journey.

Umar, who contested the 2023 governorship election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, said he remains committed to the ideals of service, accountability and people oriented leadership which, he noted, would guide his political engagement within the African Democratic Congress.

He expressed gratitude to members and leaders of the PDP in Sokoto State for the support and cooperation he enjoyed during his time in the party, acknowledging their role in shaping his political career.

The former PDP flag bearer particularly appreciated party faithful who stood by him throughout the 2023 governorship campaign, describing their loyalty and dedication as a demonstration of their shared commitment to the development of Sokoto State.

Umar further called on his supporters and political associates to remain peaceful and focused as they continue the struggle for a better and more prosperous society.

He emphasised that his new political platform would provide an opportunity to work with like-minded individuals determined to strengthen democracy and promote good governance in Nigeria.

The politician also stressed the need for unity among progressive forces in order to confront the socio-economic and security challenges confronting the country.

According to him, the African Democratic Congress offers a credible alternative capable of mobilising Nigerians towards building a just, equitable and prosperous nation.

Umar assured his followers that the change in party affiliation would not affect his long-standing commitment to the welfare and development of Sokoto State.

He reaffirmed his determination to continue engaging with communities, youth groups and stakeholders in order to advance policies that promote economic growth, social justice and sustainable development.

Political observers say the defection of the former PDP governorship candidate may significantly reshape the political landscape in Sokoto State ahead of future electoral contests, given his influence and grassroots support across the state.
