The Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), 8 Division, Sokoto, marked the 2026 International Women’s Day with a large-scale empowerment initiative aimed at strengthening women’s economic independence and promoting community development.

The event, which drew participants from women’s groups, professionals, and community leaders, was held under the theme “Give to Gain: Empowering Women, Gaining Victory” and featured the distribution of resources and support to several beneficiaries to encourage entrepreneurship and self-reliance.

Speaking at the programme, Mrs. Chinelo Koughna, Chairperson of NAOWA 8 Division, said the initiative underscores the importance of generosity, mentorship, and skills development in transforming lives and fostering stronger communities. “When women extend support to one another through mentorship, education, and empowerment, the benefits ripple across families, communities, and the nation,” she said.

Koughna also highlighted NAOWA’s ongoing commitment to women and youth empowerment through its schools and vocational centres, where training, mentorship, and sensitisation programmes equip participants with skills to build sustainable livelihoods.

Guest speakers included Barrister Rashida Muhammed, Chairperson of the Nigerian Bar Association in Sokoto State, and entrepreneur Raja’atu Muhammad Ibrahim, who encouraged women to embrace leadership opportunities and economic initiatives that contribute to national growth.

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the support, describing the programme as timely and impactful. Falamata Isyaku, one of the beneficiaries, said the assistance would strengthen her business and financial independence. “With what we received today, I will improve my business and, by God’s grace, I will also help someone else tomorrow,” she said.

The empowerment drive is part of NAOWA’s broader efforts to commemorate International Women’s Day while reinforcing its mission to advance women’s economic and social empowerment nationwide.
