Jos – In celebration of 2026 International Women’s Day, the relationship and family initiative Happily Together held a special event in Jos, highlighting marriages that embrace shared responsibilities and gender equity.

The gathering, held on Sunday, also marked the conclusion of the organisation’s “Breaking the Norms” storytelling series, which screened documentaries featuring couples whose relationships defy traditional stereotypes.

Attended by couples, development advocates and members of the public, the event encouraged discussion on gender norms in marriage and the value of mutual support in building strong homes.

Happily Together, in partnership with Africa No Filter and CcHub, documented couples whose partnerships promote fairness, cooperation and equity.

The stories highlight women thriving in leadership, entrepreneurship and academia, supported by husbands who champion their aspirations rather than limiting them.

The documentaries also portray men as active caregivers and pillars of support within the family, offering a fresh perspective on what partnership in Nigerian marriages can look like.

Speaking at the event, Team Lead of Happily Together, Nasiru Saidu said the initiative counters negative narratives about marriage, which often discourage young people from pursuing relationships.

“We observed that many stories about marriage today are discouraging, which affects young people’s outlook on family life,” Saidu said.

He added that the series focuses on women making meaningful contributions to society, while highlighting men who actively participate in household and family responsibilities.

“Communication and understanding are essential in any relationship. Couples need to align their goals and support each other’s ambitions, which ultimately strengthens the entire household,” Saidu said.

A Storyteller, Pyenmwa Deshi called for broader community support for women, arguing that empowering women benefits the wider society.

She noted that women’s potential often flourishes when supported by partners and community networks.

Similarly, Mrs Grace Barki emphasised that respect, love and mutual understanding are key ingredients for stable and enduring marriages.

The event concluded with a panel discussion where couples shared personal experiences, demonstrating how trust, shared responsibilities and mutual respect can foster strong marriages while challenging traditional gender expectations.
