Expert urges youths to harness digital technology for development

By Chinedu Adonu

The management of S. Mobile Tech has urged Nigerian youths, particularly in the South-East, to embrace digital technology as a tool for skill enhancement and national development.

Dr. Ifeanyi Adonu, Managing Director and CEO of S. Mobile Tech, emphasized the growing participation of Nigerian youths in the digital economy, highlighting technology and telecommunications as key drivers of business growth and job creation. He made the remarks in Enugu after receiving the “Icon of Entrepreneurship Award” from the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Enugu State Council.

Adonu encouraged young people to acquire technological skills that enable them to develop applications, create innovations, and succeed in a rapidly evolving global economy. He described the award as a motivation to continue contributing to economic development through innovation and youth empowerment.

S. Mobile Net Zone Limited, he explained, operates as a major distribution partner of MTN Nigeria, handling airtime, data, and other telecommunications products across the South-East region. The company employs 47 staff members and supports a wide network of partners and retailers. In 2024, it emerged as the top distributor of MTN products in Nigeria, a milestone Adonu attributed to innovative strategies and consistent customer engagement.

Beyond telecommunications, Adonu established the S. Mobile Tech Institute to equip youths with digital skills and channel their talents toward productive ventures. The institute offers training in areas such as cybersecurity, robotics, artificial intelligence, and software development, preparing youths for opportunities in the digital economy.

He noted that the institute, registered in 2024 and launched in September 2025, provides both physical and online learning programs and offers a free one-month training course for Enugu residents to encourage broader participation.

While acknowledging progress in the telecommunications sector, Adonu highlighted operational challenges, including infrastructure limitations, competition, and vandalism of telecom facilities, which disrupt services and strain existing networks.

Despite these hurdles, he maintained that sustained investment in technology, protection of telecom infrastructure, and public awareness would strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy and expand opportunities for young entrepreneurs.
