Everything wrong with Nigeria, by Emeka Obasi

Everything wrong with Nigeria, by Emeka Obasi

Anytime I drive to a petrol station, the pump price of products turns my insides out. Instead of enjoying windfall from crisis in the Middle East, Nigerians are forced to pay more for fuel. Citizens of a major oil producing nation are weeping, in the midst of plenty.

President Bola Tinubu should not take all the blame. Past regimes did us no good with oil earnings. All the rogues who steal our commonwealth and rush to the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf States to enjoy our loot deserve African traditional punishment.

In my own part of the country, thieves were paraded naked round their villages, followed by children and women who sang derogatory songs as part of the humiliation. To cap it all, a thief would end up at the Village square, forced to wipe his or her butt on a tree and allowed to go home in shame.

In modern Nigeria, thieves are given exalted positions, honoured in churches and mosques and parade highbrow areas in style. In the past, no one wanted to have an in – law from a known family of criminals. Today, the more they steal, the more the romance.

It is difficult to believe that there is nearly nothing to show for the 800 billion dollars earned from oil sales in 66 years. This is a society where just one man steals the budget of an entire Geo – Political Zone and comes back to contest elections, without questions being asked.

Earnings from the Gulf War in 1991, about 12. 2 billion dollars, remain unaccounted for. Fuel subsidy is another criminal enterprise used to hoodwink the people. Politicians understand the game of sharing, in order to enrich themselves. They cleared the Excess Crude Account ( ECA ) without looking back.

When independence was achieved in 1960, our countrymen and women thought the road to development was paved with gold. However, colonial Britain, creators of the fraud called Nigeria stood by, looking for another opportunity to pocket, divide and rule.

The January 15, 1966 coup was all they needed to finish the country. A monumental mistake by some trigger happy Army majors has kept progress underground, creating a band of wicked, confused and half baked leaders, deciding the fate of over 200 million people, from different backgrounds.

Yes, we fought a war. And of course the Genocide between 1967 and 1970 could have been avoided if other Nigerians thought like Gen. Alani Akinrinade. To the first Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff, that war was not necessary. He was a participant and should be believed.

Contemporary accounts do not tag all Kanuri as Boko Haram. Not very Fulani is painted with the brush of Killer Herdsman. Since January 1966, the Igbo have continued to be punished for the crime of five Majors, led by Wale Ademoyega, whose main objective was to free Chief Obafemi Awolowo, from Calabar prison.

This part of History is not taught in any Nigerian school. What you hear is that Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was murdered by Emma Ifeajuna and kola nut put in his mouth. The records are there, showing that Ifeajuna extended courtesy to Balewa, describing him as a nice man.

Ifeajuna later confided in his close friends that the Prime Minister died in his custody but due to a medical condition. Chief Segun Osoba, then a journalist, was one of the first to see Balewa’s body in a bush along the Lagos – Abeokuta Road, some days after January 15, 1966. He noticed no blood stains and the body was in good condition.

The official account said Balewa’s decomposed body was flown to Bauchi for burial. When Osoba and Mathew Mbu raised this issue about two decades ago, they were shouted down. Mbu was one of the young ministers in Balewa’s government and said he had nothing to gain by lying.

Ifeajuna abducted Balewa, he has not been forgiven by Nigerian leaders. His achievement of winning the country’s first Commonwealth Games gold medal is not mentioned in official quarters. Chukwuma Nzeogwu shot Premier Ahmadu Bello. When Nzeogwu died on the Biafran side during the war, his body was airlifted to Kaduna and given full military burial.

Nigerian leaders are busy tormenting the Igbo over Biafra. And until they depart from this mindset, this country will not develop. You do not throw away the baby, with the bath water. What Biafran ingenuity achieved nearly sixty years ago, continues to elude Nigeria.

An oil rich nation that has to import petroleum products, should be ashamed of itself. Biafra built refineries in months, there was no fuel importation. All the money Nigeria should be making now, is in the pockets of oil barons, from Maiduguri, to Abuja down to Lagos. This fuel politics, is grinding the masses.

Quota System is evil. It does not respect Federal Character. I wonder why the Far North produces more Federal Judges than the South. Check Law School results, it is a different picture. It baffles me how Professors from the South help to rig elections, thereby imposing touts on the people.

When Dr. Goodluck Jonathan failed to respect national balance in 2015, he created a new Muhammadu Buhari who in turn flooded the entire space with terrorists from all over Sub Saharan Africa. The imports teamed up with former almajiris who were failed by inept leadership, to torment all of us.

I weep for the Nigeria Army. The way insurgents are taking out our brave Battalion Commanders raises questions about this strange war in the North – East. Sheikh Gumi swears that those in government know the contacts of Boko Boys. Some governors mingle with Bandits up North. Nothing really has changed.

Oh, maybe this is time to change the name Nigeria. Nothing has worked here. Oil Boom turned to Oil Doom. Some Village Idiots stole their way into Government Houses. Money meant for development is shared in Local Government offices. Girlfriends control stolen resources and dictate the tune in high offices. If you are not ashamed of Nigeria, please take a bus to Kukawa.
