Abuja, Nigeria — Former African Development Bank President Akinwumi Adesina has celebrated former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 89th birthday, describing him as a courageous leader, champion of justice, and a respected voice of wisdom across Nigeria and Africa.

In a tribute, Adesina praised Obasanjo’s enduring influence, noting that the former president continues to command respect for his credibility, experience, and moral authority. He highlighted Obasanjo’s willingness to speak truth to power and participate actively in national and global debates.

“He steps boldly into the battlefields of ideas and argument, unafraid to speak, unafraid to stand, and unafraid to be counted,” Adesina said, emphasizing Obasanjo’s commitment to fairness, justice, and decisive leadership.

Adesina also reflected on Obasanjo’s personal journey, noting that the former soldier turned peacemaker has long been a bridge-builder and mentor, guiding younger generations and advocating for reconciliation and dialogue.

Describing him as “an elder among elders” and “the Baba of Africa,” Adesina said Obasanjo’s life and leadership continue to inspire countless Nigerians and Africans.

He wished the former president continued health, strength, and vitality, celebrating not only his longevity but also the lives he has influenced and the conflicts he has helped resolve.

Olusegun Obasanjo served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1976 to 1979 and later as a democratically elected president from 1999 to 2007. He turned 89 on Wednesday.
