Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Thursday led a delegation of Rivers State political leaders to London on a condolence visit to the family of the late Senator representing Rivers South-East, Barinada Mpigi, describing his death as a national loss.
Senator Mpigi reportedly died last Thursday at the age of 64 after a brief illness.
In a statement issued in London by the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike said the late lawmaker was “a dependable ally who stood by his friends even during trying times,” adding that his passing was a loss not only to the Ogoni people and Rivers State, but to Nigeria as a whole.
Wike, who visited the senator’s wife, Mrs. Patricia Obiageri Mpigi, and their children, conveyed condolences on behalf of Rivers leaders and pledged support for the bereaved family, including ensuring a befitting burial for the deceased.
“We are here as a delegation sent by the leader of Rivers State,” Wike said. “Though some of our elders could not travel due to age, we were asked to visit you before you return home.”
Reflecting on his longstanding relationship with the late senator, Wike noted that they had worked together since their days as council chairmen, describing Mpigi as “a strong pillar in the politics of Rivers State.”
“When Bari says he is your friend, he is your friend. If he says he won’t work with you, you don’t need to confirm it elsewhere. He stood with his friends through thick and thin,” the minister said.
Wike expressed regret that Mpigi’s death came at a time his experience and influence were still needed in the state, adding that although many had hoped he would recover, “God knows better.”
He urged the family to remain strong, assuring them that Rivers leaders would not abandon them.
“We will play our part. We will not forget Bari. It is our loss too. We will ensure he is accorded a befitting burial,” he said.
Members of the delegation included Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule; Senators Magnus Abe, Allwell Onyesoh and Olaka Nwogu; Rivers State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Aaron Chukwuemeka; as well as Felix Nweke, Kenneth Chikere and Hon. Dum Deekor. The minister was also accompanied by his sons, Jordan and Joaquin.
Responding, Mrs. Patricia Mpigi thanked the delegation for their visit and support, expressing appreciation to the minister for standing by the family during the difficult period.
“I thank you for your presence and support. All I can say is thank you for all you have done,” she said.
