‘Governance must work for Nigerians’, workers’ coalition tells leaders

By Victor Ahiuma-Young

A coalition of industrial unions and workers under the umbrella of the Working People Movement for Good Governance, WPMGG, has called on political leaders across Nigeria to ensure that governance translates into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens rather than remain confined to policy documents and campaign rhetoric.

In a statement, the movement reaffirmed its commitment to promoting accountability, transparency, and people-centred leadership at all levels of government — federal, state, and local.

The group, formed by workers from diverse sectors of the economy, said it represents the collective aspirations of Nigerian workers and the broader masses.

In the statement, its Protem Secretary-General, Idibra Morister, Ph.D., said, among other things:

“As a body driven by the collective aspirations of Nigerian workers and the broader masses, our movement stands to advocate for governance that prioritizes the welfare, dignity, and economic wellbeing of citizens. We believe that good governance must not merely exist in policy documents or political rhetoric but must cascade meaningfully to the grassroots — positively impacting workers, families, and communities across the nation.

“We call on Nigerian leaders, especially politicians at all levels of governance — federal, state, and local — to demonstrate renewed commitment to public service by placing the wellbeing of workers and the masses at the center of decision-making processes.

“Leadership must reflect empathy, responsibility, and accountability. Public resources must be managed prudently and directed toward sustainable development, job creation, fair wages, social protection, and improved living standards.

“The Working People Movement for Good Governance further emphasizes that political actors are trustees of the people’s mandate. We will continue to monitor policies, engage constructively with stakeholders, and hold leaders accountable to ensure that governance structures serve the common good rather than sectional or personal interests.

“We urge all workers, civil society groups, and patriotic citizens to join us in advocating for a nation where justice, equity, and prosperity are not privileges for a few but guaranteed rights for all.

“In the coming days and weeks, more processes and projects shall be unveiled on a greater scale, outlining the way forward, as the Working People Movement is all about a better Nigeria.

“Together, we can build a system where governance truly works for the people.”
