Family Doctor Program launches first batch with over 5,000 families

Family Doctor Program launches first batch with over 5,000 families

By Kenneth Oboh

The Family Doctor Program, FDP, today announced the successful commence of its first official batch on the 16th February 2026, onboarding over 5,000 families across Africa, with participants spanning 30 African countries and representing more than 300 communities.

The Family Doctor Program is designed to empower families with structured healthcare knowledge, preventive care systems, AI assitant, a health record system and direct access to trained doctors who guide households in managing everyday health needs, reducing unnecessary hospital visits and strengthening community-level care.

Vision inspired by a mother

Speaking at the launch, Founder Elijah Watendo shared the deeply personal inspiration behind the program.
“The inspiration for the Family Doctor Program came from my late mother, whom we fondly called our family doctor. From childhood to adulthood, I never saw the four walls of a hospital. Each time we fell ill, she knew exactly what to do, combining natural remedies with modern medicine. She practiced preventive care before we even understood what that meant.”

He added: “FDP is about restoring that first line of care within the family, structured, guided, and supported by AI and licensed doctors. What my mother practiced intuitively, we are now structuring systematically, combining certified doctors with AI-powered assistance to guide families daily.”

What families receive in the program

Each family enrolled in FDP gains access to a structured preventive healthcare system that includes:
• Doctor-led training sessions conducted by licensed medical professionals
• A dedicated AI Health Assistant that supports families daily with symptom guidance, preventive reminders, and health education
• Structured family health record management system
• Preventive care education combining modern medicine and evidence-informed natural health practices
• Direct access to FDP doctors for supervision and clarification

The integrated AI assistant acts as a continuous support layer — reinforcing doctor training, answering non-emergency health questions, organizing household health records, and guiding families before issues escalate into hospital visits.

Beyond Families: Employers adopting FDP as HMO alternative

While the current batch focuses on families, the program is also witnessing growing adoption from employers. Several companies that do not provide traditional Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) coverage are now onboarding employees under FDP as a structured and preventive healthcare alternative.

By equipping employees with access to trained family doctors and preventive care education, organizations are reducing absenteeism, lowering healthcare costs, and improving overall workforce wellbeing.

150+ doctors powering the movement

The program currently has over 150 licensed doctors participating in FDP, conducting training sessions and guiding families across the continent. These doctors play a critical role in delivering structured medical education, preventive care frameworks, and supervised healthcare support to participating communities.

Redefining primary healthcare

With hospital systems across many regions overwhelmed by non-emergency visits, the Family Doctor Program aims to reposition primary care at the household level, equipping families with knowledge, access, and doctor-guided preventive systems.

The successful onboarding of over 5,000 families in the first batch signals growing demand for community-driven, structured healthcare alternatives.
