European University of Nigeria, Abuja unveiled

…Targets Top-Five Ranking Through Disruptive Innovation

By Emmanuel Elebeke

Abuja — The European University of Nigeria (EUN), Abuja, has been officially unveiled with a mission to transform Nigerian university education through disruptive innovation, global partnerships, and a European-style academic model.

The announcement was made on Thursday by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Chinedum Ibezim, at a world press conference themed: “Disruptive Innovation in Nigerian University Education: Unveiling European University of Nigeria, Abuja.”

Located at Drive 6, Prince and Princess Estate, Duboyi District, EUN is a privately owned institution patterned after leading European universities, including institutions in Cyprus, Lisbon, Egypt, Bangladesh, and Germany. The university also collaborates with academics from the University of Birmingham and Berlin and maintains representatives in Europe to foster global ties.

Prof. Ibezim highlighted that EUN currently offers 23 programmes fully approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and recognised by relevant professional bodies. These include Pharmacy, Nursing, Law, Mass Communication, Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Physiotherapy, Radiography, Medical Laboratory Science, Accountancy, Political Science, Economics, Public Health, and Information Technology.

The institution boasts modern laboratories, ultramodern hostels, campus-wide Wi-Fi, 24-hour electricity and water supply, sports facilities, and a standard medical centre. Partnerships with hospitals in Abuja provide practical training for students in medical-related fields.

Assuring parents and students of uninterrupted academic calendars, Prof. Ibezim said, “When you are admitted, you can say for sure when you will graduate,” emphasizing that the university does not experience strike actions.

The Vice Chancellor also highlighted EUN’s focus on research and innovation, citing projects in AI, software development, drone technology, tablet disintegration apparatus fabrication, and neem-based treatments for drug-resistant malaria. He further explained the university’s “Learn-a-Skill” scheme, which requires students to acquire at least one vocational or technical skill and one foreign language before graduation, aiming to produce job creators rather than mere certificate holders.

EUN plans to expand its offerings to include Medicine, additional Nursing programmes, International Relations, and Postgraduate Diplomas, with full postgraduate programmes expected to commence next year pending regulatory approval.

Prof. Ibezim stated that the university aims to rank among Nigeria’s top five institutions in Cybersecurity, Nursing, Pharmacy, Software Engineering, and Law within five years. Merit- and need-based scholarships, moderate tuition fees, and flexible payment options are available.

Admissions for the 2025/2026 academic session are ongoing, with candidates scoring 150 and above in UTME eligible to apply. EUN’s maiden matriculation ceremony is scheduled for March 7, 2026, at its Abuja campus auditorium.

Prof. Ibezim concluded that EUN’s European-style education model is designed to reduce brain drain by providing globally competitive training within Nigeria, positioning the institution as a rising force in the country’s higher education landscape.
