Citizens’ Gavel has welcomed the appointment of Mr. Olatunji Disu as Acting Inspector General of Police, describing it as a timely and symbolic move that rekindles public hope for a reformed, citizen-focused Nigeria Police Force.

In a statement, signed by its Operations Lead, Ajibade Oluwafemi, issued on Wednesday, the civic organisation said Disu’s emergence comes at a critical moment when Nigerians are yearning for restored confidence in the police and a shift toward democratic policing that protects life and property, upholds human rights, and prioritises public safety over coercion.

According to the group, the wave of public goodwill trailing his appointment reflects his reputation as a police officer who sees law enforcement as a public service rather than an instrument of intimidation.

Citizens’ Gavel recalled Disu’s six-year tenure (2015–2021) as Commander of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS), where he earned national acclaim for blending firm crime control with respect for human rights.

According to the group,”Under his leadership, the RRS became synonymous with professionalism and ethical conduct, with widely shared accounts of officers rejecting bribes, assisting stranded motorists, supporting accident victims, and offering routine help to road users.”

The organisation urged the new Acting IGP to replicate the RRS model nationwide, calling for a comprehensive reorientation of the Force anchored on accountability, transparency, and people-centred policing.

Among key recommendations outlined for his tenure are the adoption of a citizen-first policing culture rooted in human rights; standardised modern training in ethical investigations and de-escalation techniques.

Others are institutionalised psychological assessments for officers at critical career stages, especially at entry level and in roles involving frequent public interaction; and improved welfare packages, including fair remuneration, healthcare access, proper equipment, and decent housing.

Citizens’ Gavel also called for strict adherence to the Police Act 2020 and the continuation of reform initiatives initiated under former IGP Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, with clear benchmarks and periodic public reporting on progress.

“We are hopeful that Mr. Disu will carry his established reputation for professionalism and service into this new office and leave a lasting and positive mark on the Force and the nation,” the statement read.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with the police leadership in support of meaningful and measurable reform.
