Bauchi 2027: Early maneuvers shape succession race

Bauchi 2027: Early maneuvers shape succession race

With the 2027 governorship election still over a year away, political activity in Bauchi State has already intensified.

Although the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not formally lifted the ban on political campaigns, aspirants across party lines have begun quiet but strategic moves to secure party tickets and alliances.

Observers say the race to succeed Governor Bala Mohammed promises to be highly competitive, featuring experienced politicians, technocrats, and first-time aspirants. Analysts also suggest that a “dark horse” candidate could emerge, capable of balancing party structures, elite interests, and grassroots expectations in the state.

Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration, which ends in 2027, is expected to play a role in shaping the succession within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with stakeholders emphasizing continuity of policies and party cohesion.

Key Aspirants Across Parties

Among the names frequently mentioned in the 2027 contest are Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Suleiman, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar (APC); Senator Shehu Umar Buba (APC); Senators Abdul Ahmed Ningi, Haliru Dauda Jika; Hon. Farouk Mustapha, Hon. Usman Adamu Sufee, Hon. Yakubu Adamu, and Deputy Governor Muhammad Auwal Jatau (PDP).

Other notable figures include Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (rtd), Dr. Bala Maijama’a Wunti, Senator Nazif Sulaiman Ganawa, Rt. Hon. Sadiq Baba Abubakar, and Capt. Bala Jibrin, some of whom are associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
