STICOMMS: AUST to host maiden Science Communications conference next week

The African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja, will host the inaugural Science, Technology and Innovation Communication Conference (STICOMMS) from January 20–22, 2026.

Themed “Communicating Science, Technology and Innovation for National Development,” the conference aims to foster collaboration among academia, government, industry, and the media to leverage scientific research and innovation for sustainable growth in Nigeria and across Africa.

Dr. Bosco Okolo Obi, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, said participants can expect engaging panel discussions, practical workshops, and networking sessions designed to strengthen the science communication ecosystem in the region.

“STICOMMS is about changing the narrative. Research should inform policy, development, and improve lives,” Dr. Obi said, noting the urgent need for improved public awareness and communication of research outcomes from universities and research institutes in Africa.

Prof. Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, FAS, President of AUST, highlighted that STICOMMS, endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, provides a unique platform to share knowledge, explore best practices, and inspire a new generation of science communicators.

The hybrid-format event will feature presentations, panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions of patents and innovations, and opportunities for networking. It will also spotlight youth-led innovations through innovation hubs, scholarships, and mentorship programmes, with participants expected from across Africa and the diaspora.

Organizers said STICOMMS is intended to become an annual platform for advancing science, technology, and innovation while tracking progress in integrating research into Nigeria and Africa’s development agenda.
