A dramatic realignment has reshaped Plateau State politics as former governor and senator, Simon Bako Lalong, handed over the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, ending months of political rivalry and signaling a new era of unity.

The move, which followed Governor Mutfwang’s recent defection to the APC, has been hailed by the Plateau Vanguard for Democracy, PVD, as altruistic, statesmanlike and timely, given the deep divisions that trailed the 2023 governorship election.

In a statement yesterday by its chairman, Mr Christopher Ishaku, the group described Lalong’s decision as a major turning point in Plateau politics, especially in light of the long-standing tension between both leaders.

Lalong had openly backed Professor Nentawe Yilwatda as his preferred successor in the last governorship contest, an election Mutfwang won. The rivalry that followed shaped opposition politics in the state for months.

However, PVD noted that Lalong’s decision to relinquish party leadership to Mutfwang, despite their past differences, demonstrated political maturity and a willingness to place Plateau’s collective interest above personal or factional ambitions.

The group also pointed to the broader political implications of the new alignment, noting that with Professor Yilwatda now serving as the National Chairman of the APC and Mutfwang as governor on the same platform, Plateau State is uniquely positioned to wield greater influence at both state and national levels.

“With key political stakeholders now in the same ship, Plateau has an uncommon opportunity to consolidate power, attract development and speak with one voice,” the statement said.

PVD urged supporters of both leaders to close ranks and work together to safeguard the political and developmental future of the state, warning that renewed divisions could undermine recent gains.

Beyond politics, the group stressed that unity has become urgent in the face of worsening insecurity in parts of Plateau State, where banditry and violent attacks have continued to claim lives and disrupt livelihoods.

According to the group, sustained political stability would strengthen the state’s ability to mobilise resources, coordinate security responses and project its concerns more effectively at the national level.

The group cautioned political actors against actions capable of reigniting old rivalries, insisting that cooperation, not recrimination, is required at this critical moment.

“Plateau stands at a defining moment,” the statement concluded, urging leaders and citizens alike to embrace unity and move forward as one people.
