The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has urged newly admitted students of the University’s School of Basic and Advanced Studies (LASUSBAS) to embrace discipline, hard work and integrity as key pillars for academic success.
Olatunji-Bello gave the charge on Monday during the orientation programme for newly admitted Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) students of LASUSBAS, held at the university’s campus in Badagry, Lagos.
She stressed that LASU maintains zero tolerance for academic misconduct, indiscipline and anti-social behaviour, noting that the institution is committed to promoting excellence, sound character, innovation and responsible citizenship.
“Your success in this programme will depend not only on your intellectual ability, but also on your commitment, time management and strict adherence to institutional values,” the vice-chancellor said.
Describing admission into the JUPEB programme as both a privilege and a responsibility, Olatunji-Bello encouraged the students to remain focused, curious and determined.
“With dedication and God’s grace, you will successfully complete this programme,” she added.
The LASU helmswoman explained that the orientation programme was designed to familiarise the new students with the rules, regulations, academic expectations and ethical standards governing both the JUPEB programme and Lagos State University.
“The knowledge you gain here will guide your conduct and decisions throughout your one-year stay in this institution. You are standing at a critical crossroads in your academic journey,” she said.
According to her, the JUPEB programme is a competitive preparatory platform aimed at testing students’ readiness, sharpening their discipline and building capacity for university-level work.
She cautioned that progression into 200 Level or full undergraduate admission was neither automatic nor guaranteed.
“Let me state clearly that progression into 200 Level is highly competitive and strictly based on performance, conduct and compliance with institutional regulations. Many students will aspire to move forward, but only those who demonstrate commitment, consistency and excellence will earn that transition,” Olatunji-Bello warned.
Earlier, the Director of LASUSBAS, Prof. Yunus Dauda, said the orientation was organised to showcase the achievements of the school and reaffirm its commitment to teaching, learning, research and community service.
He said the programme was also meant to acquaint students with the university’s rules and regulations, as well as the requirements for success in the JUPEB examinations scheduled for July/August 2026.
“Students are therefore strongly advised to remain focused, disciplined and dedicated to their studies in order to successfully transition to the 200 Level,” Dauda said.
He commended the vice-chancellor for providing LASUSBAS with the necessary inspiration, support, resources and enabling environment to achieve its objectives, noting her significant contributions to the development of ICT infrastructure to enhance learning, research, innovation, student registration, examination processing and promotion systems.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Badagry Local Government Area, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, urged the students to settle down and take their studies seriously.
Hunpe also commended Prof. Olatunji-Bello for what he described as her impactful leadership and developmental strides in the university, encouraging her to sustain the momentum.
