Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, CCIE, is the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). His impact on Nigeria’s technology ecosystem over the past decade is widely acknowledged, particularly in digital infrastructure and systems architecture. However, his influence did not begin with his appointment to public office. Rather, it stems from a steady professional progression grounded in deep technical expertise, systems thinking, and long-term exposure to enterprise-scale technology environments.
The early days and birthing a career in Technology
Kashifu’s professional journey began at Galaxy Backbone Limited, Nigeria’s government-owned ICT infrastructure company. During his time as a Network Engineer, he designed, deployed, and maintained large-scale network systems supporting government offices and agencies. Between 2004 and 2013, he rose through the ranks to become a Senior Network Engineer and Lead Solution Architect. In this role, he was responsible not only for maintaining network uptime but also for architecting solutions that balanced performance, security, and cost. Galaxy Backbone provided Kashifu with early exposure to critical systems that underpinned national connectivity. These responsibilities laid the foundation for his later reputation as a systems thinker rather than a siloed technologist.
Savings Costs at the Central Bank of Nigeria
His transition to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) marked a significant shift from infrastructure delivery to strategic technology governance. At the CBN, Kashifu served as a Technology Architect (TA), operating at the intersection of IT strategy, enterprise architecture, and oversight of financial systems. He developed a Tech Architecture repository that provided a 360-degree view of the Bank’s IT infrastructure and was part of the team that executed the software license rationalization framework that saved cost for the bank in license annual subscriptions.
By implementing the framework, technology investments were evaluated against architecture standards, duplication was reduced, and procurement decisions were aligned with long-term enterprise goals. According to public reports, the initiative contributed to annual cost savings estimated at over ₦30 billion, primarily by eliminating redundant systems and optimizing software licensing. This work positioned Kashifu as a key figure in demonstrating how structured technology governance could deliver measurable fiscal value in public institutions.
Building local solutions
Kashifu was part of the team that developed the Mocrow coin, a token built on the blockchain network to provide customers with a safe alternative for energy and utility bills and for cross-border international payments. He was also particularly involved in the development of Cynotrust, an emerging digital financial initiative. These projects explored secure digital identity, trust frameworks, and blockchain-based systems within regulated financial environments. They also further underscored his role in bridging traditional institutions with emerging technology paradigms as a solutions architect.
Personal triumphs
Kashifu is recognized as the first Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) in Nigeria’s public sector, a globally recognized certification in network engineering. This distinction reinforced his standing not only as a policy or management figure but also as a practitioner with hands-on mastery of complex systems. Over time, he has complemented this technical foundation with executive education and leadership training from various global institutions, including Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Today, his work at NITDA reflects the cumulative impact of a career spent building, evaluating, and governing technology systems at scale. From his early days as a computer science student at ATBU, Bauchi, to his time at Galaxy Backbone, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and ultimately to national digital leadership, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi’s trajectory illustrates how sustained technical excellence, when combined with institutional insight, can shape the direction of an entire technology ecosystem.
