Disputed ₦24m debt: Sujimoto says court to determine ex-parte order

By Esther Onyegbula

Sujimoto Construction Limited has denied liability over a disputed ₦24 million claim, saying the matter is before a court for determination and that the powers of an administrator appointed through an ex-parte order have been suspended.

In a statement issued in Lagos, the company said it had complied with legal procedures by depositing a bank draft for the disputed sum under protest, pending the outcome of the case.

According to Sujimoto, it does not admit liability for the claim and has filed motions challenging the ex-parte order. The company added that, by virtue of the motions, the authority of the administrator appointed under the order has been put on hold until the court reaches a decision.

The firm explained that the ex-parte order was granted on November 14, 2025, following representations on its financial position which, it said, do not reflect its current operations.
Sujimoto said it has placed evidence before the court showing continued financial stability and ongoing business activities, including payments running into billions of naira to creditors within the last 12 months.

It stated that more than ₦10 billion has been paid in the past year to banks, private investors and government agencies, including a voluntary repayment of ₦1.28 billion to the Enugu State Government on a contract that is presently under dispute.

The company further disclosed that it holds assets in excess of ₦90 billion, with liabilities accounting for less than 10 per cent of its total assets. It added that its financial profile is supported by a Triple BBB+ Investment Grade rating for 2024–2025 by DataPro.

Reaffirming its stance on corporate governance, Sujimoto said it remains committed to transparency and engagement with creditors, noting that it has consistently settled obligations through due process.
The firm also highlighted its workforce, stating that it employs over 745 professionals and has paid more than ₦7 billion in wages over the past 12 years.

Commenting on the development, Group Managing Director of Sujimoto Holdings, Dr. Sijibomi Ogundele, said the company would continue to operate within the law while focusing on project delivery and employee welfare.

“Sujimoto remains committed to integrity, accountability and excellence. We will continue to operate transparently and ensure that all obligations are addressed in line with the law,” he said.

Founded 12 years ago, Sujimoto has executed several real estate projects across Nigeria, including Giuliano, Lucrezia by Sujimoto in Banana Island, Sujimoto Twin Towers, Queen Amina by Sujimoto and Leonardo by Sujimoto. The company also manages Sujimoto Farm, a mixed-use estate combining residential, agricultural, hospitality and commercial facilities.

Sujimoto said it would continue to pursue its position through the courts while maintaining operations and delivering real estate projects nationwide.
