ENUGU — The Amufie autonomous community in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State has elected Engr. Kenneth Okechukwu Ogili as the new President-General of the Amufie Town Union for a four-year term.

The election, which followed the completion of the tenure of the immediate past President-General, Mr Chikere Onu, drew indigenes of the community from various parts of the country.

Speaking at the event, the traditional ruler of Amufie, Igwe Edwin Ikenna Ujah, expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct and outcome of the election. He assured the newly elected executives of the support of the community, including the council of elders, the Igwe’s cabinet, women and youth groups.

Igwe Ujah added that a joint meeting would be convened with the outgoing executives to review past activities and outline priorities for the new administration.

In his acceptance speech, Engr. Ogili thanked the people of Amufie for the confidence reposed in him and his team, pledging to prioritise peace, unity and sustainable development.

“We are grateful for this mandate. With the prayers and support of the people, we will work to meet and exceed expectations. Unity and peace remain central to development, and we will give due attention to all issues affecting the community,” he said.

Chairman of the Enugu State Civil Service Commission, Johnson Odo, Mni, described the election as orderly and transparent, urging the community to support the new leadership both financially and morally. He also advised the President-General to draw on the experience of past leaders when necessary.

An elder of the community, Elder Joseph Ugwuanyi, commended the peaceful nature of the election and urged the traditional institution to maintain discipline where required.

Also speaking, Justice H.O. Eya charged the executives to work as a united team, noting that cooperation with the elders and the Igwe’s cabinet would be key to the success of the administration.

The Member representing Igbo-Eze North Constituency II in the Enugu State House of Assembly, Mr Clifford Obe, praised the community for conducting what he described as a free and credible election, and encouraged the new executives to remain focused on service.

Earlier, the immediate past President-General, Mr Chikere Onu, thanked the community for its support during his tenure. He noted that some planned projects could not be executed due to funding challenges, including the inability to access the Community and Social Development Agency (CSDA) support because of counterpart funding requirements.

A women leader, Mrs Grace Odo, also expressed appreciation for the peaceful atmosphere during the election, describing it as one of the most orderly in the community’s history.

Announcing the results, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Sir Arinze Idoko, attributed the smooth process to consensus and cooperation among stakeholders, and called on community members to support the newly elected executives.
