Youth group calls for restraint as political tensions rise in Plateau

Urges Mutfwang, Yilwatda to douse hostility, strengthen peace

Jos – The United Youth Movement for Better Nigeria (UYMBM) has urged Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, to call their supporters to order and help de-escalate rising political tension in the State.

The appeal was made on Friday during a press conference and peaceful protest held at the Secretariat Bridge in Jos.

Addressing journalists, the National Coordinator of the group, Musa Joseph, expressed concern over what he described as the increasing toxicity within the State’s social media space.

He said unverified claims, inflammatory posts and politically motivated attacks were contributing to a divisive atmosphere capable of undermining peace.

Joseph accused some individuals of masquerading as data analysts while deliberately stirring conflict online, describing them as “political scavengers” whose actions deepen mistrust and widen political rifts.

He noted that such behaviour, if unchecked, could further destabilise the fragile peace efforts in Plateau.

He stressed the need for stronger coordination among relevant institutions to curb the misuse of social media and protect the public sphere, and called on the State House of Assembly, through the governor, to consider legislation that would guide online conduct, discourage misinformation, and promote responsible usage of digital platforms.

Joseph added that awareness campaigns are necessary to educate citizens, especially young people, on the consequences of harmful online behaviour.

“The youths must unite to change the narrative and build purposeful leadership in Plateau State,” he said. “We should not project the State negatively. We are the future, and we must stand for what is right.”

The group said it intends to take its advocacy to Abuja, warning that if the digital space remains unregulated, they may extend their protest to the Presidency.

The movement urged government ministries and agencies to work closely with young people to build platforms that promote peace, empowerment and civic responsibility, and appealed to both Governor Mutfwang and Professor Yilwatda to encourage their supporters to cease hostilities, prioritise unity and embrace dialogue for the progress of the State.

Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful engagement, UYMBM said sustained restraint, responsible communication and collaboration among political leaders and youths are essential for lasting stability and development in the State.
