Mahmood Yakubu
ABUJA — The Network for Good Governance in Nigeria (NGGN) has expressed support for the nomination of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as an ambassador-designate.
In a statement signed by Comrade Hakeem Mafunnwa, NGGN highlighted that Prof. Yakubu has a long record of public service and expertise in electoral management, which positions him to effectively represent Nigeria in diplomatic engagements.
The group noted that Prof. Yakubu’s post-tenure nomination is consistent with practices in other democracies, where former electoral officials often assume diplomatic or governance roles, leveraging their experience and networks.
NGGN emphasized that ambassadorial appointments are professional and representational roles, not partisan positions, and are intended to advance national interests. The organization called on all stakeholders to focus on supporting the deployment of experienced professionals for Nigeria’s international representation.
“Prof. Yakubu’s nomination reflects global democratic norms and leverages his expertise for Nigeria’s diplomatic priorities,” the statement read.
