The legal uncertainty for individuals arrested over an alleged same-sex ceremony in Gombe State persists, with investigations ongoing since 2023. Barrister Benjamin Salisu, representing some of the accused, warned that repeated court adjournments have left those involved in a prolonged state of fear and restricted movement.
Speaking after proceedings at the Gombe State High Court on 17-12-2025, Salisu noted that the court had directed security agencies to track down anyone alleged to have escaped during the incident, confirming that enforcement efforts remain active. “Until the case is finally determined, the risk to personal safety remains real,” he said.
He emphasized that the case goes beyond routine prosecution, pointing to the unique legal and social environment of Gombe State, where Sharia-influenced norms prevail. “In such a context, even allegations alone can expose individuals to serious personal risk,” Salisu explained.
The lawyer also highlighted the broader consequences of the prolonged trial, including fear, restricted movement, and public hostility toward those involved. He warned that until a final judgment is delivered, the affected individuals continue to face real social and legal threats.
