As part of activities marking the International Day of Persons Living with Disabilities, the Lagos Ikoyi Lions Club has donated 10 wheelchairs, foodstuffs and cash to Atanda Olu School for Children with Special Needs, Surulere, Lagos.
The presentation of the items to the Headteacher of the school, Mr Oyebade Afolabi, was done by District Governor of 404 A3, Lion Mary Onu, who was assisted by President of Lagos Ikoyi Lions Club, Lion Pat Marcus-Jinadu.
Speaking at the event, one of the senior Lions of Lagos Ikoyi Lions Club, Lion Stella Busari advised parents on caring for children with disabilities, encouraging them to persevere despite the challenges. She also reminded them that “while the journey is not easy, financially or otherwise, they should keep praying and placing their hope in God.
Acknowledging that government support has its limits, she reassured the parents that the Lions Club is stepping in to assist by supporting the school and will continue be a part of their journey.
The activity, featured a guest speaker, who is a mental health specialist, Mrs Ayeni, who engaged with parents on self care, emphasizing that “disability is not a barrier. There is ability in disability.”
Other Lions in attendance included Lion Loretta Odubola, Committee Chairperson for International Day for People Living with Disability; Second Vice DG, Lion Alhaji Lamidi Tajudeen, who donated to the teachers of the school; President, Ikorodu Doyens Club, Lion Adenrele Adesoye.
The parents and students were overjoyed by the wheelchairs and food items donated to the school and expressed deep gratitude for the support.
In appreciation, certificates were presented to Lion Alhaji Lamidi Tajudeen and Lagos Ikoyi Lions Club for their generosity and commitment to serving the community.
