Firm lights up Lagos, Abuja to launch Christmas celebrations

Nigeria’s festive season began on a brightly symbolic note on Sunday as the country’s largest brewer switched on large-scale Christmas light installations across Lagos and Abuja, marking the start of year-end celebrations in both cities.

The synchronised events, held on November 30, drew government officials, company executives, cultural performers and residents, creating a shared moment of public spectacle amid heightened socio-economic pressures across the country.

In Lagos, the illumination stretched along Obafemi Awolowo Way, with the principal light switch-on hosted at the open-air venue Allianz Media Garden. The unveiling point sat directly opposite a larger light park where organisers had installed themed pathways and photo points. Performers representing Yoruba and contemporary dance traditions welcomed crowds who gathered in large numbers ahead of the ceremony.

In Abuja, the installations covered the business district of Wuse along Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent. The city’s official light switch-on point was hosted at event space Layback Abuja, near the major intersection NICON Junction. The ceremony followed a structured protocol and was jointly led by representatives of key public institutions, including the FCT Social Development Secretariat, the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Lagos State Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, and senior officers of the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion.

Among the public figures present in Lagos were media personality and Maltina’s ambassador Tomike Adeoye and lifestyle creator Priscilla Ojo. Abuja’s ceremony likewise involved multiple institutional signatories and high-ranking delegates.

Pyro effects, confetti bursts and cultural sets underscored the event, but public focus remained centred on its symbolism rather than branding, with organisers positioning the display as a civic moment for shared city pride.

Addressing reporters at the end of the ceremony, Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries, Thibaut Boidin, explained why Lagos served as the symbolic origin point for the festivities.

“This season, we asked ourselves a simple question: what better way to celebrate a legendary Christmas than by lighting up Lagos? Starting here felt right. Lagos holds a special place in our hearts. Nigeria’s modern story began in this city, and for us at Nigerian Breweries, our story began here too. In 1946, everything started in Lagos, and Maltina was born here as well. So it only feels fitting that we begin this legendary Christmas experience in the very place where it all started.
We want to spread light, joy, and a true sense of celebration across the country we all love,” he said.

The Light-Up experience served as a powerful reminder that even in challenging times, there is always room for connection, happiness, and celebration; with Ibadan joining the glow next.
