The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, CITN held its 53rd Induction Ceremony recently at Regal Hall, Ikosi, Lagos, a significant event celebrating professional achievement, academic excellence, and leadership within the tax profession.
This year’s ceremony marked a historic milestone with the induction of 1,900 new members, making it one of the largest gatherings in the Institute’s history. The event drew a diverse audience of senior tax professionals, policymakers, corporate executives, and academics.
Chairman of the Membership and Professional Conduct Committee, Dr Yemi Sanni, FCTI, delivered a warm and engaging welcome address, congratulating the inductees for their dedication and perseverance. “Today, you join a community of professionals committed to integrity, excellence, and service to the nation,” Dr. Sanni said. “This is not just a milestone; it is a responsibility.” He emphasised that their membership entails a commitment to professionalism, ethical conduct, and a focus on national development.
Following his address, the 17th President and Chairman of Council, Mr Innocent C. Ohagwa, FCTI, took the stage to highlight the critical role taxation plays in economic growth and sustainable development. “Your work as tax practitioners is not only about compliance; it is about shaping the future of our economy,” he stated, encouraging new members to adopt strategic advisory roles in both the public and private sectors. “As CITN members, you are now ambassadors of transparency, accountability, and national progress.”
A key highlight of the event was the introduction of the Special Guest of Honour, Chief Dr Oladeji Akinleye, FCTI, recognised for his significant contributions to fiscal policy and tax reform in Nigeria. “A tax professional today must not only follow the rules but anticipate changes and ensure that the decision contributes to transparency and national growth,” Dr Akinleye said in his keynote address. He urged inductees to embrace innovation and digital tools in revenue administration, stating, “Digital tools and automation are essential to effective tax administration and value creation.”
In recognition of his outstanding service, Chief Dr Akinleye was presented with a commemorative plaque. Daniel, known for his impressive career trajectory from Tax Inspector to Director at the Federal Inland Revenue Service, shared an inspiring success story with the inductees. “What value are you adding to the system, to businesses, and to the nation?” he urged. His focus on mentorship and continuous professional development resonated widely. He humorously addressed the topic of gender representation, saying, “Is CITN gender biased? I think not, but let us ensure all voices are heard in the next induction.”
FCIT, Registrar and Chief Executive of CITN, Mrs Afolake Oso, reinforced the Institute’s commitment to high standards and professional development. “Our goal is to support each of you on your journey to excellence,” she affirmed before formally introducing Mr Ohagwa, who completed the ceremonial admission of the new members.
During the ceremony, the exceptional performers of the April 2025 Professional Examinations were recognised. Awardees included Olaleye Adeolu Kamorudeen, Akpeji Elizabeth Eneyeme, Faleye Oluwatosin Helen, Matanmi Olusegun Modupe, and Balogun Kayode Olaolu, each receiving N100,000 for their outstanding performance. Obioha Whitney Udeaku was awarded N500,000, while the overall best graduating student, Isa Aishatu, not only claimed N1,000,000 but also earned the title of Best Female Student in Governance.
With the induction ceremony concluded, the new members left infused with motivation and a renewed sense of responsibility, ready to embark on their professional journeys as ambassadors of the CITN and drivers of positive change in the tax profession.
