Sir Akinleye, former FMBN MD, dies at 89

LAGOS — Sir John Omotoso Omotayo Akinleye, former Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), has died at the age of 89. He passed away on July 14, 2025, and will be buried on November 15.

Born on November 26, 1936, into the Akinfenwa family of Erin Ijesa, Osun State, Akinleye attended prestigious institutions including Manchester Business School in the UK and Harvard Business School in the United States.

He worked with Mobil Oil Nigeria Limited, Barclays Bank DCO (now Union Bank Plc), and Okitipupa Oil Palm Plc before being called out of retirement to lead FMBN. During his tenure as MD, he implemented reforms aimed at addressing inefficiencies in Nigeria’s mortgage finance sector.

The service of songs will hold at Our Saviour’s Church, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, on November 11 at 4 p.m. A Christian wake will be held on November 14 at Christ Anglican Church, Erin Ijesha, while the funeral service and interment will take place on November 15 at Christ Church, Erin Ijesha, starting at 10 a.m.
