The traditional ruler of Iworo Kingdom in Badagry, Oba Oladele Kosoko, on Friday handed over a newly constructed naval post to the Nigerian Navy to enhance security and strengthen military presence along the waterways.

The facility, located in Epeme community, was formally received by Capt. Leye Omotayo, Commanding Officer, Forward Operating Base (FOB) Badagry, who described it as a model security initiative worthy of emulation by other communities.

Omotayo said the naval post, complemented by an existing jetty, would significantly boost the Navy’s operational capability and support deployments across Badagry waterways.

“Our mandate in Badagry and its environs is to ensure safety on the waterways and we will continue to do it,” he said. “Whatever the traditional ruler of Iworo is doing today will strengthen the presence of the military in his domain.”

He assured the monarch that the facility would be put to effective use, adding that the Navy remains committed to safeguarding residents, including the fishing communities.

“For our fishermen, do not be afraid when you see our personnel. They are here to serve and protect you. If you run into danger at any time, on land or water, call us—we are ready to serve,” he added.

While expressing appreciation on behalf of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, Omotayo commended the monarch’s commitment to grassroots security.

Speaking at the event, Oba Kosoko said the project was inspired by the need to secure lives and property in Iworo and Epeme communities. He noted that he had previously built posts for the Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to strengthen security architecture in the area.

“Security matters should not be left to the government alone. I promised to build a post for the Navy during the CO’s courtesy visit earlier this year, and today we have fulfilled that promise,” he said.
“We are not stopping here. We plan to build an Army post so soldiers can also come and secure us.”

The monarch urged traditional chiefs in Epeme to support the naval personnel and ensure their welfare.

Representing the Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi I, Prince Yemi Akran applauded the initiative, describing it as a laudable step toward community safety.

Also speaking, Mr. Solomon Adele, Vice Chairman of Olorunda LCDA, commended the monarch for investing in security infrastructure and assured the Navy of the council’s support.

CSP Folajimi Akosile, Divisional Police Officer, Badagry Police Station, called for improved information-sharing among security agencies and residents to enhance safety across the area.

The naval post was subsequently inaugurated and officially handed over to the Nigerian Navy by the traditional ruler.
