ENUGU — Two and a half years after Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah vowed to “disrupt the status quo,” Enugu State is undergoing one of the most sweeping development overhauls in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, according to Prof. Chris Mustapha Nwaokobia Jnr., Convener of the CountryFirst Movement.

From smart schools to digital surveillance grids, water schemes, and major road networks, the Coal City State is experiencing transformations residents describe as “unprecedented” and “visible in real time.”

Across Enugu’s 260 wards, solar-powered Smart Green Schools equipped with digital smart boards, robotics and AI studios, science laboratories, and climate-friendly designs are emerging. Health infrastructure is also expanding with 260 solar-powered Primary Healthcare Centres designed for round-the-clock service.

Road construction remains a central pillar of the administration, with 900 kilometres completed or ongoing, including 95 urban roads and 21 strategic gateway routes linking the state to neighbouring regions.

Security infrastructure has been upgraded with a Smart Security Grid integrating thousands of CCTV feeds, AI-assisted monitoring tools, body cameras, and 150 rapid-response vehicles equipped with facial and licence-plate recognition systems. Residents report improved response times and enhanced night-time visibility.

Enugu’s transport system has been modernised with five ultra-modern bus terminals, 200 CNG-powered buses, 2,000 updated taxis, and standardised bus shelters with lighting and digital timetables, bringing “new orderliness” to urban mobility.

Water supply, once a chronic problem, has improved through the revival of the 9th Mile scheme and a new Oji River project, delivering a combined 120 million litres of water daily.

The administration is also developing a 10,000-hectare Enugu Smart City featuring monorail lines, piped gas, high-speed internet, artificial lakes, and integrated infrastructure. A new International Conference Centre and a 350-room five-star hotel are part of the project, alongside luxury upgrades to the historic Hotel Presidential.

In agriculture, ward-based Smart Farm Estates and a 300,000-hectare agricultural land bank provide mechanised farming platforms and investment opportunities, complemented by a ₦100bn partnership to revive United Palm Products Ltd.

Energy reforms include the establishment of the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission, while digital governance initiatives support e-land transactions, automated business processes, and statewide data integration. Sports, youth, sanitation, and the justice system are also undergoing strategic upgrades.

Residents say the changes are palpable. Businessman Uchenna Eze described the transformation as “a new Enugu in our lifetime,” while a student in Oji River praised the Smart Green Schools as resembling “campuses abroad.”

Prof. Nwaokobia commended the administration’s “unalterable commitment to good governance and the welfare of Ndi Enugu,” noting that the reforms could define the state’s development trajectory for decades.

As implementation continues, Enugu is steadily emerging as a national model for modern infrastructure, digital governance, and inclusive development — living up to the administration’s mantra: The Future Is Here.
