Preparations for the 2026 Argungu Fishing Festival have gained momentum as the Kebbi State Deputy Governor, Senator Abubakar Umar led a high-powered delegation to the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development in Abuja.

The visit, part of the festival’s strategic engagement drive, aimed to deepen collaboration and secure federal support for the successful hosting of the globally acclaimed cultural event slated for February next year.

The delegation was received by the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Muktar Maina, and top officials of the ministry.

Discussions centered on strengthening partnerships in livestock development, fisheries, and tourism promotion—key sectors that form the backbone of the Argungu Fishing Festival and Kebbi’s rural economy.

Members of the Deputy Governor’s team included the Director General of the Main Organizing Committee, Alhaji Safiyanu Garba Bena; Commissioner for Livestock Development and Fisheries, Alhaji Kabir Usman Alaramma; Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK; and Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Musa Tungulawa, among others.

The Argungu Fishing Festival, which began in 1934 as a celebration of peace and unity between the Sokoto Caliphate and the Kebbi Kingdom, has evolved into one of Africa’s most prestigious cultural and tourism events.

It showcases the rich heritage, traditions, and craftsmanship of the people of Kebbi State and serves as a major driver of economic activity through tourism, agriculture, and entertainment.

Over the decades, the festival has grown beyond a fishing contest to include cultural displays, traditional wrestling, canoe races, agricultural exhibitions, music, and dance performances. The event attracts visitors and participants from across Nigeria and abroad, boosting local commerce and promoting the image of Nigeria as a vibrant cultural destination.

This year’s preparations, according to organizers, are focused on expanding collaboration with federal ministries, development partners, and the private sector to ensure that the 2026 edition surpasses previous ones in scale, organization, and international appeal.

The Deputy Governor reaffirmed the commitment of the Kebbi State Government under Governor Nasir Idris to preserve the festival’s legacy while leveraging it as a platform for cultural diplomacy, youth empowerment, and economic diversification.
