ABUJA- THE Senate has confirmed Dr. Bernard Doro as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Confirmation of Dr Doro was sequel to a brief screening session that lasted less than 30 minutes.
Dr. Doro, who becomes the third ministerial nominee from Plateau State in the present government, used the opportunity to outline his vision for fostering an inclusive humanitarian ecosystem in the country.
During the brief screening session, Dr Doro told Senators that he would bring his enormous experience and certification across the facets of Pharmacy, Medicine, Law and Insurance to bear on impactful policy crafting and implementation.
He specifically stated that if assigned a humanitarian portfolio as a minister, that ecosystem shall be used to solve humanitarian crises.
He said, ” I intend to contribute my quota to the Renewed Hope Agenda by transferring the different experiences to help in policy crafting and implementation. I should be a voice that’ll impact the country positively.
“Should I be assigned the humanitarian ministry? What I will be looking to do in order to bring some innovation into the ministry will be to create a humanitarian ecosystem that is efficient, that is transparent, and that is centred on the person that is being cared for.
“And this is with a view to bringing dignity to the individual, to ensure that the needs of this individual is met. And this will be done based on principles that are well established in providing humanitarian action.
“Things around impartiality, things around independence, things about just being human in our care for people”.
Apparently impressed by the knowledge and competencies displayed by the nominee, the Senate, on the strength of a motion moved by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (Ondo South ) which was seconded by Senator Diket Plang ( Plateau Central), asked him to take a bow and leave and thereafter, confirmed his nomination.
President Bola Tinubu had last week written the Senate, seeking the screening and subsequent confirmation of Doro from Plateau State as a minister.
President Tinubu’s letter was read by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Tinubu, in the letter read in plenary, hinged the request on Section 147 Subsection 2 of the 1999 constitution as amended.
He sought expeditious consideration of the request.
Akpabio thereafter referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for the required consideration and possible confirmation as soon as practicable.
Recall that Dr Doro’s nomination followed Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda’s election as the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in July. Yilwatda previously served as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.
The letter read by Akpabio came 24 hours after President Tinubu announced the appointment of Dr Doro as new ministerial nominee.
