Kogi State has recorded a 32% exclusive breastfeeding rate in 2025, up from 29.5% in 2021 – a 2.5% improvement.

The State Coordinator of the Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN) project, Mr. Bolarinwa Oladele, disclosed this in Lokoja during activities marking the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week (August 1–7). He commended healthcare workers, community stakeholders, and nutrition advocates for their role in achieving the milestone, while setting a new target of 50% in the next few years.

“Breast milk is liquid gold – packed with nutrients, antibodies, and hormones perfectly tailored to a baby’s needs. No formula food can replace its nutritional value,” Oladele said.

He highlighted its benefits – from reducing infant illnesses to promoting maternal health — and urged mothers to embrace breastfeeding despite challenges.

Oladele noted that the state government has implemented policies such as six months paid maternity leave, 14 days paternity leave, mother-friendly public spaces, and trained lactation support staff. He also called on religious and traditional leaders to promote breastfeeding practices in their communities.
