Coalition urges transparency in NNPC Ltd operations, calls for investigation of consultancy contract

Abuja – A coalition of 52 civil society organizations under the umbrella of the Patriotic Nigerian Youth Forum (PNYF) has called for greater transparency and accountability in the operations of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), urging the federal government to investigate a ₦5.7 billion consultancy contract recently awarded by the company.

In a statement jointly signed by its Convener, Comrade Olamide Odumosu, and Co-Convener, Comrade Haruna Gambari, the coalition raised concerns over what it described as “growing public interest” in the procurement practices of NNPC Ltd under its new leadership.

The group highlighted the need for “strict compliance with the Public Procurement Act” and called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure all agencies align with the transparency objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“It is our belief that every federal agency must lead by example in implementing open and competitive procurement processes to boost public confidence and ensure value for money,” the statement said.

While not making any direct accusations of wrongdoing, the coalition emphasized the importance of procedural integrity, urging relevant authorities to conduct a review of procurement practices across strategic government-owned enterprises.

It also expressed concern over reports of high-cost retreats and international travel by public institutions at a time when the nation faces economic challenges, advising government agencies to align with directives aimed at cutting unnecessary expenditures.

“We encourage all government institutions to adopt cost-saving measures in line with current economic realities,” the statement added.

The group further recommended constructive engagement with stakeholders, including the National Assembly, anti-corruption agencies, and regulatory bodies such as the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), to strengthen oversight.

“We believe in dialogue, institutional review, and reform—not sensationalism. Our commitment is to uphold national interest and protect public resources,” the coalition stressed.
