President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday marked a significant milestone in Nigeria’s energy sector with the commissioning of a 180-megawatt (MW) power facility at the Afam II Power Plant in Port Harcourt. The project is set to boost electricity generation and contribute meaningfully to national economic growth.
Commissioned virtually, President Tinubu described the project as a “key achievement emanating from the enterprising Nigerian spirit.” He noted that the plant’s completion exemplifies the nation’s ability to overcome challenges through collaboration, perseverance, and renewed hope.
He commended the Rivers State Government for initiating and enabling the project, highlighting its alignment with the pursuit of energy sustainability in Nigeria.
“I equally commend the private sector partners—Sahara Power Group, First Independent Power Limited, and Crescendough Nigeria Limited—for their investments and expertise. You have transformed this great vision into reality. Nigeria salutes you,” the President said.
Tinubu emphasized that the additional 180MW fed into the national grid will catalyze economic development. “Under my administration, achieving stable power remains an unwavering goal. We will continue to enforce policies that protect investments and promote ease of doing business,” he affirmed.
The President particularly lauded the role of Sahara Power Group, Africa’s largest private power company, in partnership with Crescendough Nigeria Limited, in completing the Afam II Power Plant. The project, which was delivered in just 16 months, was executed predominantly by Nigerian professionals—demonstrating local capacity and resilience.
Described as a crucial boost to the national grid and energy access drive, the fully operational plant is poised to power homes, businesses, and industries, thereby enhancing economic activities across the country.
Kola Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, noted that for nearly three decades, the Group has played a key role in Africa’s energy and infrastructure landscape. He emphasized the power of collaboration in delivering sustainable solutions.
“The Afam II project is more than just 180MW of power—it is about impact, transformed lives, and the opportunity to responsibly bring energy to life,” Adesina said.
He reiterated Sahara’s commitment to leading efforts toward uninterrupted and reliable power supply through strategic investments and partnerships. Sahara Power currently contributes over 20% of Nigeria’s electricity through Egbin Power and First Independent Power Limited, powering more than 50 million homes and businesses.
“Our vision extends far beyond this milestone. We see a Nigeria transformed and globally competitive, driven by sustainable energy,” he added.
Adesina highlighted ongoing expansions at Egbin Power, innovative upgrades at Ikeja Electric, and tech-driven generation initiatives at First Independent Power Limited. He also announced upcoming investments in alternative and renewable energy as part of Sahara’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability.
He expressed gratitude to the Presidency, Federal Ministry of Power, Rivers State Government, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and the Afam host communities for their support in making the project a reality.
Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd), Sole Administrator of Rivers State, praised the swift completion of the project in just 16 months, calling it a testament to President Tinubu’s commitment to home-grown solutions.
“To Sahara Group and its partners, I say congratulations. You’ve demonstrated that indigenous enterprise is alive and resilient. Your confidence in our economy and Rivers State is clearly reflected in this investment,” he stated.
Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, described the Afam II project as a landmark achievement showcasing the success of public sector reforms and private sector investment.
Similarly, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, pledged support from his ministry to address gas supply challenges in order to improve power sustainability nationwide.
